Never Trust Your Opponents
  |
We had bid well to reach a 4H contract but it just wasn't going to be. I hadn't gotten a favorable lead, trumps didn't break well, and I already had lost one finesse. The board had A K 10 of Diamonds while I had J x x. Great I thought, another losing finesse to top off this miserable hand.
I did have one chance however, that Jack just might be my salvation. This was your average casual game so when I led the Jack, West would "Cover an Honor" if they had the Queen and my problems would be over. If they didn't cover I would go up with the King trying to drop East's now known Queen. I led to the AD and got back to my hand and then played my last trump. This shortening of their cards just might help drop the Queen on it's own.
Alas, things never go as planned. West had been taking lessons recently and their game had much improved. I led the Jack from my hand and West played low without hesitation, maybe too quickly I thought. I'd seen some of their trickery recently. Was that a smile on their face? But sticking to my plan I would win the King trying to drop East's Queen. Before I could reach for the board's King however, East played low out of turn. My Jack was good and so was the King. A game! A stunned West threw the King of Diamonds at their partner. You can't trust anyone it seems.
